Our leadership team at Abacus, with over 45 years of combined experience in the recruitment industry, has successfully owned, led, and expanded recruitment agencies. This journey highlighted a pressing demand for cost-effective back office solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs rather than generic, one-size-fits-all services.

Recognising that startups and SMEs often lack the initial capital and in-house financial expertise, these critical functions frequently go overlooked. In response, we established Abacus in 2021 under the Recruitment Investment Group, bringing our deep recruitment and talent acquisition knowledge to the forefront.

As an ACMA-qualified accountant and the current Chief Financial Officer, Burger has achieved significant milestones in his professional journey. Specialising in Financial and Operational Management, he is recognised for his strategic insight and ability to lead substantial change improvement programmes across various local and international recruitment organisations.

With 18 years of experience in Finance Leadership roles, including at an AIM-listed global recruitment organisation, Burger has been acknowledged for his expertise in setting up organisations for success in the recruitment industry’s finance, accounting, and operational departments.

His work with senior stakeholders and his leadership in guiding organisations through complex transformations, such as mergers and acquisitions, have established him as a seasoned professional in the recruitment sector. Burger’s journey has become the cornerstone of his reputation and capabilities, enabling him to understand the landscape of working with large teams and organisations and to advise on the best solutions and practices.

Austin: Financial Control and Operations

Austin has built a commendable reputation as a seasoned finance leader and trusted advisor in the recruitment industry, thanks to his strong background in projects focused on innovation and excellence. He has successfully led the hiring and training of an outsourced finance team.

With extensive knowledge in payroll and a proven ability to efficiently build and manage operational finance functions across various organisations, Austin excels at implementing new systems and processes. This expertise made him the trusted choice to oversee domestic and international payroll and billing teams and optimise their functions and strategies.

Acknowledged as pivotal in coordinating and managing management accountant teams, Austin collaborates closely with multiple managing directors on financial forecasting, aiding them in making informed commercial decisions. His ability to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting allows him to confidently lead the audit process and manage statutory filings for all companies within the group.

Tom is a recognised recruitment operations professional and a key member of Abacus’s leadership team. With experience in strategic and operational support and outsourced services across various recruitment brands, Tom is crucial in advancing Abacus’s mission to provide exceptional back-office support.

Tom excels in overseeing strategic and operational initiatives that enhance efficiency and financial stability for recruitment organisations. His IT strategy, project delivery, and vendor management expertise have further strengthened these capabilities.
